Video DJ Joshua Carl

In 1987 Joshua Carl broke his first turntable. Fast forward to 1991, when mix tapes where actually tapes… Like many others before and after him he started on substandard equipment making mixes for his friends and parties. Eventually by the mid-nineties he was dabbling in the local battle scene and by early 1997 he had landed his first residency which lasted over 5 years. Since the beginning he was able to hone one of the most sought-after skills in a DJ’s arsenal: Reading the Crowd. Complete with turntablist style cuts and creativity he took his fight to the world of electronic music where he was one of the first DJs in New England to bring multi-genre mixing to the most exclusive clubs of the east coast. In the initial decade of Joshua’s DJ career he played just about every room in the city, and always more than once, having at most times 5-6 residencies a week. No stranger to long flights, he made many trips up and down the east coast stopping at every major city along the way for guest appearances. One of the first DJs to know no musical genre boundaries and throw the rule book out the window he always kept it danceable and crowd pleasing. For many years Joshua had the privilege of working with some of Boston’s elite, as well as working at Sound Factory Records as Asst. Mgr and music Buyer. In 2006 he was called away for a tour of duty in Iraq, there he served as a combat medic, received plenty of awards for service, and still serves today in the US Army Reserves as a medic and Instructor in battlefield medicine.

Returning to a completely different scene than he had left, he threw a knuckleball to the DJ community, VIDEO. With the development of Serato’s Video SL plug-in he truly took DJ’ing to a completely new level. With vinyl controlled video he was able to still mix in his same head-turning style, but now clubs had a new element they never had before with an amazing impact on club-goers. With the development of video remixing he has become one of the top tier video DJs in the scene as well as constantly producing his own music video remixes for the VJ community. Most people are still in complete awe when it comes to a vinyl-video set, even people who have decades in the scene and understand how fast technology works in this day and age. He served as a lead instructor and developed many of the curriculums for the DJ Mix Academy, and now serves as a Northeast representative for Scratch-events.com out of New York City representing them at corporate events in the New England area. Needless to say Joshua is a true performer at heart and in the DJ booth, but on top of that he is a true professional with knowledge in every facet of the scene. Currently you can find him playing in many venues around New England on a weekly basis. He currently holds two video residencies in Downtown Boston and has upcoming dates in a few major cities.
